Doors and windows for a Hyderabad home

Set the opening, frame, glass, hardware and installation details together so the finished assembly suits the room and its exposure.

Choose for the opening and use

Timber, steel, aluminium and uPVC frames differ in appearance, upkeep, section size, hardware and installation requirements. Compare complete assemblies rather than frame material alone. A Hyderabad home may face strong sun, dust and seasonal wind-driven rain; orientation, shading, drainage, seals and maintenance all affect comfort. Ask the designer to consider ventilation, privacy, security and how the window will be cleaned safely. Glazing needs selection for location and human impact risk under applicable Indian standards; ask the supplier to identify the glass type and markings for each opening.

Before ordering

  • Measure masonry openings after confirming plaster and sill details. Have the supplier and site supervisor agree who owns each final measurement and confirms it before manufacture.
  • Approve a written schedule showing opening number, frame material and finish, pane arrangement, glass specification, opening direction, hardware, mesh and accessories.
  • Ask for the manufacturer's installation details, including fixing points, perimeter gap treatment, sill drainage and compatible sealant.
  • Discuss safety glass where the location and design warrant it, especially large panes, doors and glazing in impact-prone positions. Select exact glass with a qualified designer and glazing supplier.
  • Confirm window water drainage paths are not blocked by plaster, sealant, paint or a sill finish. Product designs vary, so follow the system detail.

During installation

  • Check the opening, sill and frame position before fixing. Confirm the frame is secure and operates freely before the perimeter is sealed.
  • Inspect that compatible anchors, packers and sealants follow the selected system instructions. Foam or surface sealant alone may not be an adequate fixing detail.
  • Ask the installer to demonstrate opening, locking, restrictors, insect screens and drainage features. Check shutters do not clash with curtains, counters or furniture.
  • Agree how the perimeter joint meets exterior plaster and waterproofing. Photograph the junction before concealment.
  • Protect finished frames and glass from welding sparks, cement splashes and abrasive cleaning during other works.

At handover

  • Operate every shutter and lock. Inspect glazing edges, seals and visible hardware for damage or incomplete work.
  • Ask how to clean tracks and keep designed drainage openings clear. Retain product labels, glass details, hardware keys and care instructions.
  • During rain, if practical, observe whether water drains as intended. Report leakage promptly so the installer can identify whether it comes from the frame, joint, sill or adjacent wall.

Common pitfalls

  • Ordering from rough openings before final wall and sill levels are agreed can leave oversized gaps or shutters that do not fit.
  • Selecting glass only by colour or thickness leaves impact safety and location-specific loading unresolved.
  • Sealing designed drainage openings to stop a leak can trap water inside the frame instead of correcting the cause.
